October 11, 2024
The Brattleboro-based Rich Earth Institute will host its annual Rich Earth Summit on Potash Hill from Nov. 12-14. The in-person and virtual event brings together over 250 researchers, practitioners, and advocates from 30 countries to share knowledge, showcase innovative projects, and foster new collaborations in climate-resilient sanitation. Tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can basis at richearthsummit.org.
This year’s gathering marks the 10th annual global event on this topic organized by the Institute, which was founded in 2012 with a mission to advance urine reclamation to create sustainable and just nutrient cycles.
2024 Summit panel topics will include urine fertilizer applications in agriculture; climate resilient systems and sanitation justice; navigating policy pathways; knowledge-sharing strategies and collective action initiatives; and virtual tours of urine recycling facilities. Sarah Nahar, M.Div, Syracuse University, will present the Summit Keynote: “To Have Excretory Justice, We Have to Deal With Our Crap.” The event will also feature a urine recycling mobile unit created by the portable toilet company Wasted.
Since 2012, the Rich Earth Institute has been a leader in advocating for regional nutrient sovereignty and climate-resilient sanitation. The Institute operates the first and largest community-scale urine recycling program in the United States. To learn more, watch the video below and visit richearthinstitute.org.
